FER-01: Ferrofluid 10 ml

Article ID: FER-01
Weight: 52 g
A ferrofluid is a liquid containing very small ferromagnetic particles. These particles are around 10 nanometer in size (that's 0,000001 mm). Because of these particles the liquid reacts strongly to magnetic fields and behaves strangely inside a magnetic field. More information, warnings and links can be found with these photos.
The little flask contains between 9 and 10 ml.

The ferrofluid is packaged into a small flask that contains between 9 and 10 ml.

Since the ferrofluid causes impossible to remove stains on clothing, it is recommended to use old clothing or an apron. It will also leave long lasting stains on the skin and on the cornea, therefore protective gloves and protective glasses are a good idea too.
This protective equipment is not included in the delivery.

We used a plastic tub to conduct our experiments.

This is my first attempt to fill ferrofluid from a large bottle into a small bottle. It did not work out too well. I had to dispose off the pants afterwards.

Usually some sort of accident is bound to happen. Stains on furniture and on the floor are best removed with water and soap. One should though not wait until the stains have dried up.

The tiny magnetite particles are suspended in a liquid that is somewhat comparable to motor oil.

Here we hold a magnet beneath the glass, close to the ferrofluid. We can see how the spikes form and how the spikes follow the magnetic field lines of the magnet. The stronger the magnetic field the denser and more pointy these spikes become.

Here we have used a stronger magnet (article W-12-G) than in the picture before this one. Visibly more spikes have formed now.

This picture is taken looking inside the glass from above.

A lot of additional interesting information about ferrofluids can be found on the web:

The flask is well padded during transport to make sure it won't break.

Having completed your experiments you can fill back the ferrofluid into the flask with the pipette that is included. This way the ferrofluid can be re-used several times.
